A new translation of 東京抒情 by Shuntaro Tanikawa

A Lyric of Tokyo
by Shuntaro Tanikawa (trans. by Naoko Ishikura)

Children play hide-and-seek in a blind alley in Suginami
Piled salt melts in front of a lattice door in Tsukiji
Tokyo is a page from a discarded manga
A fluorescent light flickers at the storefront of a tailor's shop in Kameido
A radio-controlled boat sinks under a bridge in Tamagawa

Nameless wild flowers blossom along a railway in Okubo
Bach is heard between hedges in Setagaya
Bread rises in an oven in Aoyama
Tokyo is a big tepid sigh
The corpse of a kitten floats in backwater from the ocean in Shinonome

A bulldozer in Kokuryo smashes a stone arrowhead
The pupil of an eye starts to open during a surgical operation in Hongo
A horizontal bar in a school playground in Koganei is glittering in the setting sun
A faucet of a ready-built house in Todoroki keeps leaking
Tokyo is a poker face that's not good at hiding

All the beautiful things are turning into lies
The things nobody turn their heads to are indeed the unwavering ones
All the things our spirits brought forth today
An old doll in Roppongi gazes at the sky from the back of a glass case
A taxi driver in Shinjuku clicks his tongue once again
